September Update

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to put anything on here. So here is an update on things that have been going on since the last update.

We had a successful show at Llanfair, where we met fellow traders, old customers and new. We have been slowly plodding through the stack of pre-orders we had from the show, with only a handful now outstanding.

At Llanfair, we released our Padarn Railway Brakeman’s Van kit, as well as opened pre-orders for our Dinorwic Wagon range and the Ffestiniog Railway Mk3 Quarryman’s Carriages, in 4 different variations. We also displayed a “work in progress” which was the Ffestiniog Railway’s Mk2 Quarryman’s Carriages, in both Type A and Type B.

On the recent bank holiday, I had arranged to measure and photograph some FR carriages that were stored at Glan y Pwll. The morning was spent in the carriage shed measuring and photographing many of the heritage carriage fleet. The aim is to produce a kit for the Ffestiniog Railway’s Ashbury 4 wheeled carriage, No10. Which we can release in 3 variants. First Class (No10), Third Class(Nos 7,8,9,11) and Converted First (No14). Just a note, when quoting numbers, I use the “Old Company” numbering scheme, as many carriages and wagon in the preservation era have been re-numbered multiple times!

The weekend after the Llanfair Show, I took a weekend off and spent the Saturday with David Mees and the Irregular’s at the Wigfa & Llanrwst Light Railway. David was kind enough to lend me the use of his Roundhouse Mk1 Taliesin, which looks rather well at the front of the Quarryman’s train.

All stock with exception of No12 “Flying Bench” and No1 “Zoo Car” at the front of the train are H Jones Engineering Kits. The two at the front are IP Engineering kits.

Whilst on the subject of H Jones Engineering kits, I have also been working on the design of a few new kits. These are in various stages of development.

This kit was going to be announced on the same weekend as Elsecar. But due to recent events, it was decided not to.

As you can see from the above images. I have a number of kits in development. The Open Goods and Hearse Van are nearly ready. The hearse van just needs me to find some time to laser cut the parts to test and the coal wagon needs some tweeking to the 3D print files.

Unfortunately, I’ll have to finish with some not-so-good news. Due to various circumstances which I will not go in to here, the price of Laser Grade Birch Plywood has gone up nearly 500%, some sizes are now very difficult to get hold of. Previously, I have made a batch of 10 kits to stock. Due to the price increase, I will have to cut kits to order. This maximises the use of the stock of plywood I have and keeps the kits at the same price. In future, the prices may have to increase as I buy new stock of plywood to replenish the stock that’s been used. The price will not increase until they absolutely have to. I believe that quality kit can be made affordable, which is what I try and achieve with my kits.

May Update

I realised a few days ago that it has been a while since I’ve written a post. Here’s a bit of an update for those who do not follow us on social media.

Nantlle Valley Wagon Works have built an excellent example of our Ffestiniog Railway Early Brake Van kit.

Nantlle Valley Wagon Works have built an excellent example of our Ffestiniog Railway Early Brake Van Kit. He has made some slight changes to the kit, using a different handrail and added some additional details.

We have also been to Statfold Barn Model Railway Show at the beginning of April which was quite a successful event. It was nice to chat with previous customers and to new ones.

We have almost finalised out next kit to be released. Which is the Ffestiniog Railway’s 4 Ton Goods Van, “Van 99”. As much as it bugs me that 99 is a post-preservation number, not many people will know it as “Van 116” ! So to avoid confusion, it is being called Van 99.

We will also be in attendance at the Llangollen Garden Railway Show with a trade stand. The current plan is to release the Van 99 kit at the Llangollen Show. (www.https://www.lgrf.co.uk/)

Something which I have been keeping an eye out for is a Vacuuform machine. After a few years of patiently searching for one at a reasonable price. A few weeks ago I managed to find one. Needs some repair work, but it is mostly in good condition. It just need some tidying up and minor repairs. This now opens up a whole load of kits that I’ve been meaning to produce, but unable to due to their design.

Update on products and engineering samples.

The break over Christmas and New Years has been quite a productive one so far. Christmas day was spent developing a Not-Sentry Box brake van. This is based on what the FRs Sentry Box van would have looked like prior to the iconic “Sentry Box” was added on the balcony, giving the van it’s nickname. The vans were originally built as brake vehicles for the Birmingham Carriages that were ordered in the 1880s. The vans were used as the brake vehicle for passenger gravity trains. Less than a handful of these vans were constructed, with none surviving after the introduction of the Brown Marshall/Boston Lodge built “Curly Roof Vans”.

The HJE Engineering Sample of the Not-Sentry Van. Note the obvious mistake on the door! The completed sentry type vehicle is a Triassic Models kit built by Glenn Williams.

Van No3, The Ffestiniog Railway’s replica was measured and photographed before Christmas and on Christmas day, fuelled by turkey and mince pies. I drew up the replica. The parts were laser cut om the evening and glued together. Sealed with wood sealer then sprayed with Halfords red oxide, I was quite pleased with the result! It has 24mm Binnie Engineering wheels on 3mm steel axles and some HJE brass bearings.

Over Christmas, I also took the time to develop some more products. The sentry box was a good excuse to get these finalised.

The last 3D prints of 2021!

As shown in the image above, I designed and printed some FR goods couplings and the handbrake for the balcony of the Not-Sentry Box brake van.

A variant of the HJE FR Goods coupling on a prototype wagon.

Over Christmas, I also took the opportunity to design and produce a FR 4 ton Van. There about a dozen vans originally on the FR, with only 2 surviving into preservation. This coupling is specifically designed for this and some other kits that are in development.

All the kits and products mentioned above will be released in the first half of 2022.

Tim Wilkinson’s Linda sat on Tan y Bwlch bridge on the Wigfa & Llanrwst Light Railway.

Finally, during the annual steam up at the Wigfa & Llanrwst Light Railway, I managed to get this photo of Tim Wilkinson’s Linda. I had repaired the motion, converted it to Manual, modified the tender-loco drawbar, added chopper couplings, made the tender cab and made the tender oil tank for this loco a few months ago. I think it looks rather good!

Britomart

I had been asked a few weeks ago to detail a locomotive for a co-worker’s son. This was a PDF Models Quarry Hunslet kit that has been been built as Pen yr Orsedd Quarry HE707 of 1899 “Britomart”. The loco had already been built to a good standard and I had been asked if I could add the handrail and Britomart’s distinctive toolbox.

Since I work at Boston Lodge, it was easy for me to get photos and measurements that I could work off. The toolbox was drawn up on Solidworks and 3D printed on the new Anycubic Photon Mono and handrail knobs were ordered from Cornwall Model Boats.

Some 1mm brass rod was then bent and fitted through the handrails. Once I was happy with it all mocked up, The parts were painted and permanently fitted to the loco.

The image below shows the finished product. I’m quite pleased with it.
