I started H Jones Engineering in 2017 as a way of supplementing my income from my day job at the Ffestiniog Railway. I worked out of a small outbuilding in my parents house and made a start on repairing 3 1/2” and 5” gauge locomotives.
When I purchased my own property in 2018, it had a large workshop which I was able to use to expand the business. Since then, we have acquired several machines and grown to be able to produce many items from steam locomotives, surveying equipment and 3D printed items. I had also taken more of an interest in 16mm modelling, particular the pre-preservation Ffestiniog. This is reflected in the kits that I produce.
Some kits that I have made have been produced as a request from an individual, but the majority of the kits have been designed and produced purely because I wanted to build one! Hence, a lot of the kits are for FfWHR prototypes. I was a fitter for the railway for over 12 years, and could notice some inaccuracies in some kits that have been produced for the FfWHR vehicles. This then made me design and build by own.
The majority of our work is done in-house, with the exception of steel and brass laser cutting. We produce all of our kits and locomotives from the best quality raw material in order to supply the best quality product to the customer. Kits are normally produced in batches.
Locomotives are made to order, although I try to stock the parts for at least a couple locomotives at a time which does reduce the lead time. Lead time for locomotives is subject to my current workload. Please get in touch and I can give an estimate on the lead time.
Please bear in mind that H Jones Engineering is a business I run in my own time. I am in full time employment. Lead times on locomotives and re-stocking times may vary throughout the year. Any items purchased which I have in stock, they will be dispatched within 3 working days of the order date.
